Advanced Systems Consultants - NewsletteRIssue 3 - August 2001
WELCOME! Welcome to our third monthly newsletter. We had various requests for information following our last Newsletter and hopefully we've managed to provide the information in this edition. Email us at
newsletter@advsys.co.im Past Issues: April 2001,
March 2001
Over the last few weeks, Manx Telecom have experienced several problems including difficulties with their core router and outages within Btnet which caused a degradation in our service. Manx Telecom have apologised for the problems, which we are pleased to say were minimised by our resilient Internet feeds. The Isle of Man is taking a lead in allowing well regulated gambling to be offered over the Internet through the introduction of The Online Gambling Regulation Bill. The Isle of Man arguably has the lead amongst offshore jurisdictions for all forms of e-commerce services due to our international reputation for regulation and telecommunications infrastructure. For the gaming industry this has now been further enhanced by a very favourable duty regime. The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for licensing on-line casinos and the first three licence holders will be announced in the next few weeks. We believe that when the announcement is made the names of the licence holders will send shock waves through the Casino industry. It is likely that all on-line casino operators will try and locate here. In addition once the Isle of Man has the stamp of approval of some of the biggest corporations in the world we also believe other business will follow. This initiative could have a very significant impact on the Isle of Man and the foresight of Julian Lalor Smith at the Department of Home Affairs should be roundly applauded. More information including Government Press Releases, legislation and application forms can be found on our site. http://www.domicilium.com/gaming.htm AWARDED NOKIA PREMIER ACCREDITATION

THE ISLAND GAMES WEBSITE HAD OVER 1.5 MILLION HITS The Natwest Island Games were a showcase for more than just sport. Datacentre’s online results service clocked up over 1.5 million hits during the two weeks of the Games and we were delighted to have been able to assist them by providing quality server hosting and enabling the site to cope with this level of access. We were also pleased to provide high speed internet connectivity from all the games venues. TOP ENHANCEMENT TO MANX RADIO WEBSITE We are pleased to announce that we are now streaming Manx Radio live broadcasts using Windows Media Player as opposed to RealPlayer. Visitors to the Manx Radio web site will notice a substantially improved service quality, both in audio clarity and the number of listeners that can be supported concurrently. Watch out for more announcements shortly! Listen live http://www.manxradio.com/ USERS OF CLUBMAIL
We are delighted with the response to the ClubMail service. You may remember from our previous Newsletter that it gives Island based clubs and societies their own domain name and email addresses. Due to sponsorship by Bank of Bermuda the first 100 clubs receive their domain name and 25 email addresses totally FREE of charge.
Cronkbourne Cricket Club and The Manx Gilbert & Sullivan Society are examples of the groups that have recently taken advantage of the service.
The Manx Gilbert & Sullivan Society website can be viewed at http://www.gands.org.im/ WARNING FOR UNMETERED INTERNET ACCESS USERS We have received several calls from customers confused about unmetered Internet access and where the line is drawn between us and Manx Telecom. To clarify: Unmetered Internet Access (UIA) is a Manx Telecom product which, for a monthly fee payable to Manx Telecom, allows you to call our Internet dial-up access number without paying a per-minute call charge. If you are a heavy user of the Internet and find that your quarterly phone calls to our dial-up service regularly exceed the quarterly fee for UIA, you may want to consider subscribing to the UIA service. In summary, the UIA service provided by Manx Telecom may save you money when accessing the Internet via us. You do not have to cancel your account with us and use Manx Telecom as your Internet Service Provider to benefit from UIA. We have received reports of customers subscribing to UIA and being also charged for access to "ManxNet Freedom", which is a separate product and not required to access our Internet services using UIA. Please ensure that you check you bills carefully and contact Manx Telecom if you require clarification of what you are being charged for. If you wish to enable UIA on your phone line, you can subscribe online without the need to contact Manx Telecom direct (see the link below). Simply complete the online form and ensure that you have the UIA dial-up number 08440 406244 entered in your Internet configuration, rather than our normal non-UIA number 614575.

CHANGE OF FAX NUMBER
Please note that we have changed our fax number to (01624) 829525.
DO YOU WANT A CONTENT FILTERING SERVICE?
We are considering introducing a "family friendly" content filtering service to our customers which automatically filters the web sites you access and emails you receive for unsuitable content. If unsuitable content is detected the site is blocked or the email message is quarantined messages as appropriate. We currently provide
content filtering to all the Isle of Man schools for the Department of
Education.
There is always a catch and in this instance the high
costs for equipment and licencing that we would have to pay. We therefore could only provide this service for an additional surcharge of between £5-£10 per month. We will also only be able to introduce the service if there is sufficient interest from our customers. Is this a price you would be happy to pay for peace of mind about what your children are looking at on the net?
Let us know at info@domicilium.com MACINTOSH-COMPATIBLE IPASS SOFTWARE
