Domicilium qualified to deal with the Internet hacker

PRESS RELEASE – November 2003

The modern perception of a “Hacker” painted by the media is that of a sinister loner who sacrifices sleep in his or her quest to break into computer systems to steal or change data. Whilst this type of scenario does occur a “hacker” is generally defined as “someone who uses programming skills to gain illegal access to a computer network or file.” Although this may sound a simple concept to understand the technical boundaries which this encompasses is exceptionally diverse. A high proportion of IT managers still cling to the fact that “no-one would bother hacking our company” but in truth everyone is susceptible even if the data held is of no apparent value.

For example, an intruder wishes to steal data from an Insurance Organisation in the Isle of Man, why risk detection with a direct attack when the attack can be launched from a compromised machine sitting in Australia? Patching systems and firewalling networks does go some way to securing networks but the only true test of security is to look at the security model through the eyes of a hacker, a trusted hacker, an “Ethical Hacker”.

This thinking like a thief to catch a thief approach has spawned a new qualification the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification from The International Council of Electronic Commerce. Domicilium are pleased to announce that Tony Cawte who is a senior consultant with Domicilium has become only the 8th person in Great Britain to achieve this qualification.

Jon Allen, Managing Director of Domicilium said “We are delighted that Tony has gained this valuable security qualification from such a highly regarded certification authority. This qualification is currently held by just a handful of people in the UK and endorses the level of internet security skills we have to offer.”

Tony added “The CEH gives a more hands on approach to IT Security as opposed to other more theoretical security exams. Penetration testing is an integral part of my role at Domicilium and I feel this qualification compliments this element of my position. Too many companies rely on automated approaches to security where Domicilium pride themselves on providing diversity and looking at security through the eyes of a real attacker.”

Domicilium have a wealth of experience in designing, building and maintaining secure multi-tier business Internet solutions with a specialist understanding of the high level security.
