Google goes Manx

PRESS RELEASE – February 2006

Domicilium, recently had it brought to our attention, by a vigilant home Internet user, that the Island was not being presented correctly by a leading online organisation.

Google, the renowed search engine had made an unintentional oversight - when you browsed to the “Manx” version of their website at www.google.co.im you’d see the label “English” underneath the Google logo whereas other jurisdiction version of their website such as www.google.je or www.google.tt all stated their country names i.e. Jersey or Trinidad and Tobago.

Keen to ensure the Island was promoted correctly, we undertook negotiations with Google who were extremely helpful and they have subsequently updated their “.im” website which now clearly states “Isle of Man”.

Speaking on the matter, our Technical Director, Dr Phil Adcock said “Domicilium were approached in our role as Managers of the .im domain registry to see if we could assist in contacting Google. We have been very pleased with Google's positive response.”

He went on to add “The Internet has opened up the world to people looking for information on every imaginable topic. Thousands of people regularly use these Internet search engines so Domicilium were happy to clear up the common misconception and ensure the Island was given its correct title. Although tracking down and then getting to speaking to the correct person within such as large organisation was certainly a struggle.”
