Advanced Systems Consultants - NewsletteRIssue 1 - March 2001
Customers who've been with us since the early years will remember our monthly newsletter. We have been asked many times to start again and so we have! The purpose of this monthly newsletter will be to keep everyone informed of exciting new developments, services and facilities. We hope that you find the information in this newsletter useful. If you want to provide us with feedback, email us at newsletter@advsys.co.im. This edition of the newsletter contains important
information for all dial-up users. Please take the time to read
this section and feel free to contact
our helpdesk if you have any queries. BGP Project Significantly Improves Our Service As most customers are aware, we have had two independent multi-megabit connections to the Internet for some time - one via BTInternet in the UK and the other via PSInet in Ireland. Our BGP project, which allows us to use these feeds for "failover", is now complete. If one of our Internet feeds fails, for example if there is a problem at PSI or BT, all inbound and outbound traffic is automatically routed via the other feed. This means that you stay on line, even if there are serious network problems. The completion of BGP also means that we deliver "least cost routing". Users will particularly notice improvements when sending traffic to / from the United States (assuming the server at the other end responds quickly!) since our PSInet feed is connected to a fast backbone to the US. We are providing these new facilities free of charge to all our customers. To take advantage of these facilities, dial-up users may have to make some configuration changes (please see the next section). IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR DIAL-UP USERS In order to make our domain name services (DNS) more resilient, we are moving our name servers to new IP (Internet Protocol) addresses and are implementing a new and more powerful server. This means that we will have three servers available rather than two. Since DNS services are used by nearly every piece of Internet software, it is important that you check the settings on the computer you use to access the Internet and make appropriate changes to let them talk to the new servers. The changes are fairly simple to make but if you are unsure or require assistance then please feel free to call or email our helpdesk (contact details are at the end of this newsletter). If your computer allows you to obtain the IP addresses of these servers automatically (most Windows PCs allow this), then select " Obtain DNS Settings Automatically" in the network settings of your computer via the control panel. If your computer does not support this (e.g. some models of Apple Macs / iBook) then replace the addresses of the old servers with the new ones. Your existing configuration: Our old primary DNS server is at IP
address 194.72.124.1 The changes: Our new primary DNS server is at IP
address 217.23.160.30 If you are unsure, please contact our helpdesk who will guide you through the changes. ADVANCED SYSTEMS AND DOMICILIUM You may have noticed that Advanced Systems is also using the name "Domicilium". This new name is the result of a venture with an international technology investment company and provides us with an international face. Domicilium uses Advanced Systems’ expertise to offer proven e-solutions for businesses that want to operate in a low-tax environment. SPONSORSHIP OF TREK-TIBET 2001 Trek-Tibet 2001 is being held between 20th May and 1st June 2001 and two island residents will be trekking at altitude for 12 days in aid of Mencap and Manx Mencap. APPEAL The following appeal is on behalf of the Indian Earthquake Appeal- IOM. We are helping to distribute this appeal via email in order to minimise postal costs and ensure that all donations make a direct difference to those in need. Gujarat is one of the most productive states of India as well as the birthplace of great men like Mahatma Gandhi. It boasts ownership of 11 Universities and 10 airports, within an area of 196,000 sq.km, which represents 6% of India. The devastation caused by the earthquake of the 26th of January 2001 has caused incalculable damage, resulting in hundreds of thousands of people becoming homeless and destitute. This normally celebratory Republic Day of India turned into a nightmare. Schools, hospitals, industries and homes have been destroyed. The rising death toll currently stands at 35,000 with another 70,000 injured. That’s more than the population of the Isle of Man! Death and destruction, from as far as 500 miles from the epicentre town of Bhuj have been reported. An URGENT need now exists for food, shelter, medicines and clothing, and the normally self-sufficient population has been humbled to extend a begging hand for aid, both local and international. The rebuilding cost of the infrastructure will no doubt run into billions of pounds. The benevolent people of the Isle of Man have always risen to the occasion with their care and generosity during calamities around the world, regardless of race, creed or colour, shown by a generous donation of £15,000 given by the Isle of Man Government to this appeal. Our appeal target is to raise at least £30,000. Although appeals on this scale cannot provide total relief to the whole area affected, the donations and gifts received will be used to assist in rebuilding at least ONE local village and enable its people to have medical treatment, adequate housing, supply of clean water, electricity and communications, along with a provision for future schooling. This appeal aims to make a difference to some people in a big way, rather than a minute difference to the many. We will ensure 100% of your support, however large or small, will go directly to those in need. We guarantee that NO administration costs will be deducted from this appeal. This focused activity will make a bigger impact with the money available, and attributed totally to the generosity of the people of the Isle of Man. Send your donations to: The Indian Earthquake Appeal - IOM Or direct to the bank: Isle of Man Bank, Sort Code 55-91-04, Account No. 41967801 Make cheques payable to - Indian Earthquake Appeal- IOM For further information: Mahendra Patel 822512 or Haresh Measuria 824491 As you may have seen in the press, we have recently launched our IPass internet roaming service.
