Tier-1 Internet backbone comes to the Isle of Man
PRESS RELEASE – May 2005
Castletown based Domicilium, the Island's leading business Internet Service Provider have been working on a rigorous network upgrade program over the past 12 months to improve the capacity, resilience and performance of the Island's internet links. Part of this upgrade program has meant that Domicilium have opened their own office or Point of Presence (POP) located in Telehouse, London. Telehouse is one of the largest communications hubs between Europe and the rest of the world and is where all major telecommunications and service providers interconnect with each other for voice and data services.
In addition, Domicilium have been accepted as members of the London Internet Exchange (LINX) which is the primary European internet peering point for "Tier-1" service providers. Internet traffic which leaves the Isle of Man via Domicilium will now be routed directly to the destination service provider rather than across the Internet - vastly improving the performance of the internet for Domicilium customers.
Phil Adcock, Technical Director of Domicilium said - "As the main innovators in IP communications technology on the Island and the Island's longest established Internet Service Provider, we are extremely pleased to take this significant step forward which we believe will be attractive to established businesses, and those looking to invest in the Island who pay great attention to our communications infrastructure.”
He went on to add, “This is a goal that we have been working towards for some time now and builds on Domicilium's independent next-generation Island-wide network which we launched at our recent 21st Century Communications exhibition to support multimedia services such as voice-over-IP and video-over-IP. Importantly, this also moves us a step closer towards our strategy of more cost-effective communications for the Island."
